Chapter Twenty-Four

“The council will make a decision before the full moon.” Those words from Kimji and Folnear whirl in my mind as I slip down the back streets of the Frostlands in the middle of the night. The black cloak I borrowed from the family closet flaps around my shoulders in the breeze as I hurry. Seth will calm my mind and quench the burn in my body.

At least, that was what I expect.

I tiptoe around to the back of the council building. Light silhouettes the bars on the windows, giving the appearance of multiple smaller windows. The sky is clear tonight and the buildings gleam in the moonlight. Then, just as I reach the second window, Seth’s holding location unless he has been moved, a white Alicorn with a horn outstretched stands. I startle. This cannot be an escaped animal from the stables. All of the Alicorns in the stable are nothing more than horses, stripped of their wings and horns.

“Leave,” he says.

A tremor goes through me and when I blink, he vanishes. I put my hand on the cold wall beside me, slick and shining with ice, and inhale deeply. My visit with Seth will be quick. I knock twice, soft, on the window. It slides up and Seth’s pinkish skin matches the warm firelight behind him. He beams with a smile when his eyes meet mine.

We grasp hands through the bars and whisper. Are you well? Yes. Do you eat enough? Just enough. Warm enough? Yes. And I love you dearly. Then I tell him about my experience in the temple releasing Ahjay from a soul tie. Seth’s expression darkens the longer I talk and a little voice inside of me reminds me that I have overstayed my welcome. It is time to leave.

But Seth squeezes my hand tighter. “Am I holding you back, Becks?”

I press my face to the bars. “I need you.”

“But you also need to lead everyone else.”

My heart stutters in my chest and I cling to him as he leans back. “Please.”

“Ahjay wasn’t even dark. He wasn’t even… me.”

“Seth, no. This is who we are and I will not let this go.”

He stares into my eyes and the weight of his glance sinks all the way to my feet and holds me to the ground. “You and I both know the Creator’s rule for Guardians was put in place for a reason. No falling in love with your partner because darkness might try to use it against you. Ryan and Ariel followed that religiously and were only released by the Creator himself. Look at us, Becks.”

I refuse to follow his thoughts because I know where they end. Ignorance has never been so welcome.

“I won’t ever be anything more than darkness.” Seth drops my hand. I reach for him, stretch my arm as far through the bars as I can, but he steps back and blinks to fight tears.

“What did they do to you?” I am not even certain who they are, but the instinct inside of me wants to blame Kimji.
